The Journey


The Absolute Adventure philosophy is simple. Discovery through challenge. Real challenge, the kind of challenge you face when you head out into the bush with a pack on your back and embark on a journey into the unknown. To this end we have created The Ultimate Journey, a totally unique New Zealand wilderness camping adventure combining tramping, camping, a 90m abseil and underground cave expedition in one mind-blowing-once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

TRAIN
First a training session where you learn the skills you will need for the next 24 hours like navigating and abseiling.

TRAMP
Using a map and compass, navigate your way through the beautiful native bush of this unique Waitomo limestone landscape to the edge of the spectacular Waipuna Cliffs.

ABSEIL
The view from here is unbelievable, on a fine day you can see a large portion of the North Island and you will get the chance to savour it as you control your own descent of the 90m vertical metres to the bottom.

CAMP
At the bottom of the cliff your campsite waits. Enjoy dinner and conversation around the open fire and sleep beneath the stars under the protection of a natural rock overhang.

CAVE
The challenge is to follow the water upstream jumping through deep pools, scrambling over rocks, ducking, diving, and squeezing through a labyrinth of spectacular cave passage to emerge triumphant through the upstream entrance. Then it's back to the Absolute Adventure camp and a well-deserved shower.

What to bring
Full training and technical equipment is supplied. Bring warm and comfortable outdoor clothing (no jeans) including raincoat & overpants, polypro, polar fleece if you have them (otherwise we can supply). It is essential that you bring sneakers with good grip (these will be getting wet and muddy), swimwear and a towel.

Note: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided. Bring you own energy snacks.
