Caving Adventure

'Adventure' is probably the most misused word in the English language but its true meaning remains "to journey into the unknown". Caving represents the absolute literal definition of the word adventure. At its heart is the discovery and exploration of unknown worlds. At Absolute Adventure we specialise in REAL caving adventures. The company was started by Kieran McKay, one of New Zealand's top cavers, out of a desire to share his passion with others.

Our philosophy is to take you caving, not on a tourist 'adventure' so the trip is extremely hands-on. We teach

you how to keep yourself safe using harnesses, cowstails and abseiling devices so that you can be in full control of your climbs and descents.

We explore the Luckie Strike cave system, specially chosen for its physically demanding nature and the sheer beauty of the unending crystal formations. This expedition is not for the faint hearted, clients are not led by the hand and must be prepared to get wet, muddy, exhausted and quite possibly break a nail! The trip downstream explores the ancient upper levels of the cave and demands constant climbing, abseiling, traversing (attaching yourself to safety lines using your harness) squeezing and crawling. At the bottom of the cave system you will abseil down a waterfall to land in the lower level passage where you will be challenged to find your way back to daylight as you use the stream to navigate over rockpiles, under narrow water-filled passages and up several waterfalls to finally emerge in daylight exhausted but euphoric. We operate with a maximum of 5 people per group which allows us to give clients freedom to explore and truly capture the exhilaration of underground exploration and each client can check out our photo gallery and see just how much fun their adventure was!!

This is what the author of The Rough Guide had to say about us: "If you're up for a committing adventure trip, this has to be one of the best in New Zealand. If you've tried and loved canyoning or Grade V whitewater rafting this is an absolute must." - Paul Whitfield.
